How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator

New here? Start by tapping one of the "Examples (click to try)" chips above the input — the amount, tax rate, and tax-out/tax-in direction are all filled in and the result appears instantly. Once you're comfortable, just enter your own amount and pick the rate and whether your figure is tax-out or tax-in. The tax-exclusive price, consumption tax, and tax-inclusive total recalculate live as you type, so there's no button to press. Handy for the register, accounting, and quick quotes.

  1. Enter the Amount.
  2. Pick the Tax Rate (10% standard or reduced 8%).
  3. Choose whether your amount is Tax-out or Tax-in.
  4. The tax-exclusive price, tax amount, and tax-inclusive total appear right away. Use "Copy Result" to paste it elsewhere.

Worked Example

For a tax-out price of ¥1,000 at the 10% rate, the tax comes to ¥100 and the tax-inclusive total is ¥1,100. Switch to "Tax-in" and enter ¥1,100, and it breaks back down into a ¥1,000 base price plus ¥100 tax. Flip to the reduced 8% rate and a ¥1,000 tax-out price becomes ¥80 tax and a ¥1,080 total.

When This Comes in Handy

  • Quotes and invoices: Move between tax-out and tax-in figures on the spot.
  • Register and shopping: Break a tax-inclusive price into the base price and the tax.
  • Reduced rate checks: Switch to 8% for food and other reduced-rate items with one tap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the amount I enter sent to a server?
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. The amount you enter is never transmitted to or stored on any external server. You can use this tool with complete confidence.
When do the 10% and reduced 8% rates apply?
In Japan, the reduced 8% rate applies to food and non-alcoholic beverages (excluding dining out and alcohol) and to newspaper subscriptions, while the standard 10% rate applies to most other goods and services. Pick the rate that matches the tax category on your receipt or invoice.
How are fractional amounts handled?
This tool rounds the tax amount and prices to the nearest yen. Because businesses may round down or up differently, the total here can differ by a few yen from a specific invoice.
