YouTube Chapter & Description Checker

Validate each of the four rules your YouTube description chapters (timestamps) must meet to actually show up. Also checks the 100-character title limit, the 5000-character description limit and the hashtag count, and formats chapters in one click (ascending sort + 0:00 fill-in). Everything stays in your browser.

Chapter validation

No chapters (timestamp lines) found yet. Add lines like "0:00 Intro" to your description.

How to use

Paste your full description and the tool extracts every timestamp line (a time like 0:00, 12:34 or 1:02:03 followed by a space and a chapter title) and checks the four rules YouTube requires for chapters to appear: the first one is 0:00, they are in ascending order, there are at least 3, and each is at least 10 seconds long. If a rule fails, hit "Format chapters" to get a sorted list with a 0:00 line filled in, ready to copy back. The title field checks the 100-character limit and warns above 60 characters, where titles tend to get truncated in search results.

Examples

  • 0:00 Opening / 1:30 Main part / 4:45 Wrap-up → all four rules pass (chapters enabled)
  • 0:45 Start… (no 0:00 line) → rule fails; "Format chapters" adds "0:00 Intro" automatically
  • 1:02:03 Ending → parsed as 1 hour 2 minutes 3 seconds (3723 seconds)
  • A 72-character title → within the 100 limit, but you get a truncation warning for search results

FAQ

Is my data sent to a server?
No. All checks and formatting run entirely in your browser; nothing is transmitted or stored externally.
Why don't my chapters show up on YouTube?
Chapters in the description must meet all of these rules: the first timestamp is 0:00, timestamps are in ascending order, there are at least 3 of them, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Paste your description into this tool to see exactly which rule fails.
How long can a YouTube title be?
The limit is 100 characters, but titles are often truncated around 60 characters in search results and suggested videos, so put your key words near the beginning.
How many hashtags are allowed?
If a description has more than 15 hashtags, YouTube ignores every hashtag on that video. A few highly relevant tags work best.
What does the Format chapters button do?
It extracts only the timestamp lines from your description, sorts them in ascending order, and adds a 0:00 Intro line at the top if no 0:00 chapter exists (unless the first chapter starts less than 10 seconds in, which would break the 10-second rule — you'll see a notice instead). Copy the result back into your description.
