How to Use the Character Counter

Type or paste your text into the text area above. The character count, word count, line count, and more are updated in real time as you type — no button press needed.

  • Characters: Counts all characters except newlines (includes spaces, symbols, and emoji).
  • No spaces: Character count with half-width spaces, full-width spaces, and tabs removed.
  • Words: Counts whitespace-delimited tokens as words (best suited for English text).
  • Pages (400 chars): Standard 400-character manuscript pages, rounded up (1–400 chars = 1 page). Useful for checking the length of reports or fiction.

Click a target chip (such as "X (280)" or "Report (2000)") and the tool shows how many characters remain — or how far you are over the limit. For example, typing Hello world! gives a count of 12, so choosing "Manuscript (400)" shows 388 characters remaining. If you go over a limit instead, the overflow appears in red as N over. Click the same chip again, or "No target", to clear it.

Great for these situations

  • Drafting posts for X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, or other platforms with character limits
  • Checking the length of reports, essays, or written assignments
  • Trimming product descriptions, meta descriptions, or other copy to a target length

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my text sent to a server?
No. All counting is done entirely within your browser. Your input is never sent to or stored on any external server, so it is safe to use with confidential documents.
How is the manuscript page count calculated?
It is based on a standard 400-character manuscript page. The character count is divided by 400 and rounded up (1–400 chars = 1 page, 401–800 = 2 pages).
Does it work on smartphones?
Yes. It works in any browser on smartphones, tablets, and PCs. No installation or sign-up is required.
