How to Use the Running Pace Calculator

What the Projected Times Mean

The projection table simply applies the entered average pace to each listed distance. It does not model fatigue, elevation, surface, weather, aid stations, congestion, traffic lights, or GPS error, and it is not a physiological race-prediction model. A pace sustained for 5 km is not automatically sustainable for a marathon.

FAQ

Is my data sent to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is transmitted or stored externally.
What units are used?
Pace is shown in min/km, and speed is also shown in km/h.
What are the half and full marathon distances?
A half is 21.0975 km and a full is 42.195 km. The projected times use these exact distances.
What pace is sub-4 or sub-3?
Sub-4 (under 4 hours for a full marathon) is about 5:41/km; sub-3 is about 4:16/km.
How do I enter 1 hour 30 minutes or 52 minutes 30 seconds?
Convert to decimal minutes: 90 for 1:30:00, 52.5 for 52:30, and 65.333 for 1:05:20. Divide the seconds by 60 and add them (15 seconds is 0.25, 20 seconds is 0.333, 45 seconds is 0.75).
Can I actually run the predicted times?
The table simply multiplies your entered pace by each distance, so it is closer to an ideal floor than a prediction. Pace fades as distance grows, so pair it with Peter Riegel's empirical formula (the distance ratio raised to the power 1.06). For a 50-minute 10K the plain projection gives a 3:30:59 marathon, while that formula gives about 3:50.
